       Obituary of ROBERT ELGIN McARTHUR

       From Pembina Times, March 1989:

       Mr. Elgin McArthur, beloved husband of Gertie McArthur, passed away peacefully at Morden District Hospital at the age of 90. Elgin was born at Hensall, ON, on Sept. 30,1898, the eldest son of a family of five. Living on a well-treed Ontario farm may have contributed to Elgin's life-long love of planting and caring for trees. He attended public school at Hensall and later commuted daily by train to Exeter for high school. He completed his education at Snowflake after moving there with his family in 1914. Elgin had inspired to career in medicine, but when circumstances prevented his training to be a surgeon, he turned his keen mind and steady hands to the art of farming the land. He married Gertie Booker in 1925 and together they raised a family of three: Merna, Mary and Bob. There are 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He and Gertie lived for 60 years on the McArthur farm until in 1985, when they moved to a nice apartment in Morden.  

       Sports and music were two of Elgin's life-time interests. He played hockey and baseball and was known for his effective curve ball. He enjoyed curling and playing pool. Right up to the time of his death, he played a good game of pool with his Morden friends. At one time, Elgin played valve trumpet in the Snowflake community band, but was best known for his fiddle, and entertained at many a dance, concert and family get-together. The community of Snowflake relied on Elgin's support in many ways. He was a Pool Board member for 20 years, School District Secretary-Treasurer for 23 years, Church Steward for 56 years (48 of which were as Secretary Treasurer). Along with his brother Ken and Ed Findlay, Elgin helped spearhead many a community building bee, whether it was a farmhouse, bam or renovation such as the existing United Church building. Elgin's philosophy was that everyone should work together to try to make the world a better place.  

       Lately, he expressed the hope that in his life he had done some good. We believe that he did! To his family and friends he was a source of strength and inspiration. Each one of us carries special personal memories of him. Besides his loving wife Gertie, he leaves to mourn his children Merna and George McClelland of Letellier, MB, Mary and Gordon McNab of Oxbow, SK, Bob and Colleen McArthur of Snowflake: his grandchildren and great grandchildren, Elaine and Paul Gaultier, Shirley and Robert Go_ Mona and Gordon Brown, Larry and Cheryl McClelland, Eric McClelland, Merilee McClelland, Bonnie and Chris Goding, Rachelle McNab, Wayne McArthur, Lynn and Ken Mallette, Karen McArthur, Eleanor McArthur; nine great grandchildren. He is also survived by brother and sister-inlaw Ken and Leatha McArthur, sisters Jessie McTaggart, Edith McLenaghan, and Hazel Taylor as well as numerous relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 30 at 2 pm, in the Snowflake United Church with Rev. Kerry Craig officiating. Pallbearers were nephews Dennis Hillman, Kim Taylor, Clare and Bryan Bowden, Leslie and Greg Booker. Honorary pallbearers were Elmer and Renske Dew, Earle and Gladys Booker, Mervin and Dorothy Gower, Everett Smith, David Headrick, and Alvin Findlay. Musical contruibutions were made by Landon Booker, Joan Wheeler, and the choir. Ushers were Doug Brown and Glen Wheeler. Interment was at Snowflake Cemetery. Graham's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Friends, if they so desire, may make a donation in his memory to the Snowflake United Church Memorial Fund or to a charity of their choice.

       Obituary of JESSE GERTRUDE BOOKER

       widow of ROBERT ELGIN McARTHUR

       From the Sentinel Courier, Aug. 22, 1995:

       Jessie Gertrude McArthur, age 92 of Morden, formerly of Snowflake, passed away at Morden Hospital on Thursday, July 27,1995 after suffering a stroke. Gertie was born in 1903 at the George and Elsie Booker farm near Snowflake.  

       As the oldest of a family of eleven [10?],Gertie learned to help at home, and in many ways became a 'second mother' to her younger brothers and sisters. She attended school and church at Snowflake, and enjoyed skating at the rink, dressing up for carnivals, and the social life that comes with being part of a large family. Gertie spent a year working for a family in Winnipeg. She returned to marry Elgin McArthur in 1925 and the couple took up farming in the Snowflake district.  

       They shared hard times and good times on the farm and there raised three children, Merna, Mary and Bob. Gertie and Elgin lived together for 60 years until they moved to Morden in 1985. Together they adjusted to a new life, meeting new friends, and becoming reacquainted with others. When Elgin passed away in 1989,Gertie moved to the Legion House where she became part of the family there.  

       She was always ready to help a neighbour, to visit, play cards and take part in planned activities. Her guest book and diaries were filled with notes that showed the high esteem in which family and friends held her. At Morden, as at Snowflake, Gertie took a keen interest in the church. She was active in the V.C.W. and became a"Golden Age" member. The friends who drove her to church made it possible for her to continue an important part of her life. Gertie amazed us all with her zest for life and her ability to adapt to change. How she loved an outing, whether it was to a smorg at Snowflake, dinner at the Prairie Kitchen, a family wedding or a jaunt to Portage, Saskatchewan or Florida!  

       Because she was fun to be with, she received many invitations and could be ready to go on the spur of the moment. She was a "people person" who took pride in remembering family and friends with birthday cards, letters and phone calls. Each one of the family has at least one of her possessions to treasure, but more importantly will have memories of a warm and generous mother and grandmother.  

       Gertie was predeceased by her husband Elgin in March 1989and by six brothers. She leaves to mourn her children: Merna and George McClelland of Letellier, MB, Mary and Gordon McNab of Oxbow, SK., Bob and Colleen McArthur of Portage la Prairie: her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Elaine, Paul Ryan, Jodi and Jeremy Gaultier, Shirley, Robert, Jennifer and Daryl Godkin, Mona, Gordon, Aaron and Meagan Brown, Larry, Cheryl, Robyn, Bradley, and Adam McClelland, Merilee and Orval Proctor, Cameron Valerie, and Alayna McNab, Bonnie, Chris, Jillian and Jaydc Goding, Rachele McNab, Wayne, Aggie and Chrissy McArthur, Lynn McArthur, Karen McArthur, Eleanor and Mike Gleason; her sisters Violet Hillman, Florence and Bill Bowden; her brothers Clarence Booker, Jack and Velma Booker; sisters-in-law Nelly, Grace, Lillian and Elyda Booker, Jessie McTaggart, Edith McLenaghan, Hazel Taylor, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The following are some recollections of Kelly Andres.

       I remember visiting my grandparents, Les and Mary Booker on the "Douglas Farm" near Indian Head, Saskatchewan. It was referred to as the Douglas Farm as they were the previous owners. That house seemed so big to me since it had a library and two separate staircases. In the kitchen there was a breakfast nook with stain glass windows. Upstairs there was an attic that we weren't supposed to go into but we would always sneak in there because of the "treasures" we would find. I remember a white toy kitchen cupboard set that had a flour drawer and some of my Mom's, Sherill, dolls. Those dolls had porcelain faces that I found scary and really didn't like. I also remembers all the hard cover books that we in the library and especially the book, A Child Garden of Verses. I remember walking in the yard reciting" The Friendly Cow all Red and White".  

       Grandpa Les Booker liked to tease his grandchildren. He would have us out on the field looking up in the sky for jets taking off from Regina just as we were about to step into a cow pie! Grandpa Les was also the only one with brown eyes (his wife Mary, their 2 daughters Sherill & Marilynn, their husbands and 6 grandchildren at that time all had blue eyes).         I wondered why he had Skippy's eyes (our pug cross dog). I also loved a green ceramic dish with a squirrel on top that Grandma Mary had made. It always had nuts in it so it was the first place I would go when arriving at the farm. I now have that dish and fondly remember those times when I use it. Next to the farm house were two big rows of evergreen trees that I used to go to and pretend that I was in a forest. At the back of the farm was a railway track that was fun to go exploring to. Although I was only about 5 or 6 years old when they sold the farm I was very sad. Mary and Les would spend their winters in Lakeland Florida and the summers they rented a basement suite from Mrs.? in the town of Indian Head. In the summers I would walk down to the Sweets and ride horses. I also remembers visiting the Harrop relatives and friends.

       Mr. W. H. Hillman came from Portage la Prairie in 1922, starting a garage business. In the spring of 1923 he also had an oil business. When Chas. Sanders sold out and left for B.C. in 1925, he took over the Implement Agency and went into partnership with Geo. Glenn. In June 1929 Bill married Violet Booker and was in business in Snowflake until he sold out to Peter Panchuk in August 1954, retiring to live in Portage la Prairie, then returning to live in Snowflake in 1966 with Violet who returned to care for mother who is an invalid. They have four children.

His varied interests included a love of nature, sports, reading, photography and travel, but in his later years his fondest times were spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a member of the Canadian Order of Foresters for 85 years. Funeral service was held from Pilot Mound United Church in Pilot Mound on 1 Conc. Wed. June 2nd, with Rev. John Hogman officiating. Ash interment followed in Greenwood Cemetery, Pilot Mound. Graham's Funeral Services of Pilot Mound was in care of arrangements.

       Violet led a busy life and described herself as a professional volunteer. She was involved in church work and taught Sunday School. Violet taught C.G.I.T. and 4-H. At Portage, she was the superintendent of the Sunday School for several years. She also operated a children's clothing store which she enjoyed very much. After her mother Elsie had a stroke, Violet and William moved back to Snowflake in 1966 to live with and provide 24 hour care. Elsie's mind was affected by the stroke and a lot of gentle loving care was required. Violet made over 50 quilts and gave them to children and grandchildren. As of 1999, she is 92 years old and lives in her own room at a lodge in Pilot Mound.

She was predeceased by her husband Albert Dohn Booker (1987); son-in-law Tony Fijala (1977); grandson Dennis Fijala (1986); granddaughter Kelly Lovell (1966); two sisters, Ethel Baker and Thelma Kidd. She leaves to mourn her passing three daughters, Doreen and Ben Hemminger of Morden, Jean and Allan Lovell of Manitou and Reita and Bob Thomson of Winnipeg; nine grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral service will be held Monday, August 13 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul's United Church, Morden with Rev. Wayne Rankin officiating. Cremation will take place.        From the Darlingford Saga II 1870-1970; 1970-1999, p. 209:

       Albert D. Booker is a son of Mr. and Mrs. George Booker, who came to Manitoba from South Cayuga, ON, in 1901, and homesteaded in the Snowflake area. They had a family of 8 sons and 3 daughters, and 4 of the boys served in the second world war. Albert married Elyda Brown and farmed in the Snowflake area for 4 years before moving to the Darlingford district. They farmed the Albert Lawson farm on the SE (the E. 10-3-7) for one year, and then purchased the NW11-3-7. They had 3 daughters...  

       Albert Booker sold the farm in 1977 and he and Elyda retiree to Morden. He was very active at the Friendship Centre and enjoyed fellowship there and also at St. Paul's United Church. He suffered a heart attack in May 1987 and died shortly after. Elyda continued to live in the house until 1992 and then moved into a duplex. She moved into Morden Legion House in 1997 and still resides there. She suffered a stroke in 1996 and is bothered by arthritis. She was active in the Hospital Auxiliary.

       ELDON MICHAEL BOOKER. On Dec.2, 1992 word was received of the passing of Eldon Michael Booker of Kapuskasing, Ontario. He had been in hospital there for several months, on oxygen for Emphysema. Mike was born in Snowflake, Man., on July [Birth Date Confidential]. He was best known for his keen love of horses and sports and will always be remembered for his sense of humour.  

       In 1939 he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Artillery (l7th Field Battery) and served in Britain, France, Belgium and Holland. On Dec.27th,1945 Mike married Nellie Viul of Holland. They moved to the farm in Snowflake until the 50's when he joined the Trans Canada Pipeline, retiring in Kapuskasing about 1982. Mike was an active Legion member. Mike was predeceased by his parents George and Elsie, four brothers Leslie, Albert, Roy and Wilbur. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Nellie, daughters Lynn Ann, Mickey Lee and grandchildren Erin and Jesse. He also leaves to mourn his passing sisters Gertie McArthur, Violet (Bill) Hillman, Florence (Bill) Bowden,brothers Clarence (Rebecca), Verne, Jack (Velma) and sisters-in-law Grace, Elyda, Lillian, as well as many nieces and nephews.        Bill was born in Puddington, Devonshire, England and came to Winnipeg in [Birth Date Confidential]. He moved to the Aberdeen district with Myrtle and Jack McLelland in 1923 where he completed his public school education. Bill started farming in 1933 on a half section of land on which Snowflake is now situated. In the fall of 1936 he moved to the S 1/2 of 12-1-10 in Louise which he farmed until 1966. Florence and Bill gave up farming and moved to Winnipeg in the fall of 1966. Florence worked in the china department at Eaton's downtown store until she retired in 1985. Bill was the caretaker of the Belcrest apartment block where they lived until his health forced him to retire in 1972. Bill had problems with his hips resulting in four hip replacement operations over the years which helped him in joy a few more years of mobility. They moved to the Kent Towers apartment on Grant Avenue in1972. They moved to Riverview Health Centre in November 1997 due to health reasons.

FLORENCE WINNIFRED BOWDEN, March 28, 1920.        Florence passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 31, 2000 at Riverview Health Centre at the age of 80 years. She is lovingly remembered by her husband of 59 years, Bill; her sons, Bryan (Darlene), Clare (Doreen) and her daughter Ardith (Barry Bolander); grandchildren Marny (Keith Dyck), Trevor (Shannon), Carrie, Rodney (Colleen), Stacey, Michael and great-grandson Nathan Dyck. Florence was predeceased by her parents, George and Elsie Booker; her sister Gertie McArthur and her brothers, Leslie, Albert, Verne, Roy, Eldon and Wilbur Booker. She is survived by her sister Violet Hillman; brothers, Clarence and Jack (Velma) Booker; sisters-in-law Elyda Booker and Lillian Booker and many nieces and nephews. Florence was born and raised in Snowflake, Manitoba. On June [Birth Date Confidential] she married Bill and they lived on their farm in Snowflake where Florence's life centered around family and the community. Her many activities included gardening, baking, canning, many sports and the church. In 1966, they moved to Winnipeg where Florence began a 20 year career in the China Department at Eaton's where she enjoyed working with and collecting beautiful china. In retirement, Florence and Bill enjoyed travel to Hawaii and bus tours throughout Canada and the United States. Florence was a member of Westminster United Church and the U.C.W. Florence will be remembered for her ready smile, cheerful disposition and sociable personality. In recent years, Florence dealt with her brain tumor with the same positive attitude as she lived her life. The family would like to thank the staff of Riverview Health Centre for the gracious care given to Florence during her stay at Riverview. Funeral services will be be conducted by Rev. Robert Campbell and Pastoral Associate Rose Ferries on Tuesday, September 5, at 12:30 p.m. at the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home,4000Portage Ave. with viewing one-half hour prior.        On Thursday night last week, about7:30, the bam of Wilbur Booker, located 1 mile NW of Snowflake burst into flames. In an hour it was burned to the ground. There was no loss of livestock. Nothing could have been saved as the fire spread very quickly. A large amount of baled hay was lost and several hundred bu. of oats. This barn was built in 1907 by Wilbur's father, Mr. George Booker. It was a bank bam of 36X60 with an addition of 36X40.This was a well kept bam, the day before a shingle job had been completed on the south side. At time of writing, cause is unknown. Building and contents were partly covered by insurance.

       WILBUR LORNE BOOKER. Peacefully on Saturday, Nov.5,1988, at home, Wilbur Lome Booker, of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, beloved husband of Lillian, passed away at the age of 66 years. Wilbur was born at Snowflake, Man., the seventh son of a farming family. He left Snowflake to attend the Faculty of Agriculture, U of M. In 1939 he enlisted in the 17th Field Battery, 15 Field Regiment and served overseas in Britain, France and Belgium. He was chosen as a middle distance runner and boxer to participate in regimental sports. After being discharged from the army he married Lillian Hartle of Narcisse on Nov.l7,1945. With his wife he returned to the family farm in 1947. Together they raised a family of four children. In addition to grain and livestock farming activities, he became an active community supporter, church leader and school board trustee, as well as a leader in 4-H, and avid participant in baseball, curling and an outdoorsman. After semi retirement in 1974 he moved to Portage. He made time for some business pursuits and he continued his involvement with the Legion and Army, Navy and Air Force Veteran organizations but his lifelong enjoyment of athletic activities consumed most of his time.  

       His active personal life style served as an inspiring example to his children and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, an infant son, three brothers, Roy and Albert and Leslie. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Lillian, daughter Gail (Bruce) of Portage la Prairie, and three sons, Greg (Debbie) of La Riviere, Les (Sheila) of Elie, and Mark (fiancee Lynn Dewis) of Portage, grandchildren Erik, Kris, Terry, Robyn, Tyler, Andrew and Nicole, brothers Verne, Mike, Clarence and Jack, sisters Gertie, Violet and Florence.           A Service of Remembrance was held from Trinity United Church, Portage la Prairie on Wed., Nov.9, 1988 at 11:00 am with Rev. Russell Young officiating. A trio, Landon Booker, Wayne Motheral and Bob McArthur, sang "Just As I Am" with Jean Motheral accompanying on the piano. The congregational hymn was "The Lord's My Shepherd", recessional "The Old Rugged Cross", was played with Mrs.     E. Groll presiding at the organ. Honourary Pallbearers were Messrs: Nick Didkowski, Alvin Findlay, Gordon Pedden, Bob Curry, Bob Rinn, and Jack McLean. Attending in their respective groups were members of the Minards Ball Team, (Liniment League) Portage and District Senior Slow Pitch League, Masters Curling Club, Army and Navy and Air Force Veteran Unit #13, and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #65.        LINTON EVERETT LOVE was born at 74 Glendale Avenue in the Parkdale district of Toronto. It was the home his parents had built when they were married in 1910. It still is in good condition in 1994 and there is a photograph of it in my files.

       The family moved in 1918 to the home of Grandma Smith at 57 Triller Avenue who had been living alone since the death of her husband Jonas Smith in 1911. So it was while living there that Linton started school at Fern Avenue Public School. This meant a walk up Roncesvales Avenue each day going to and from School. Photograph of the school taken in 1994 is in my files. There is an old photograph of the house at 57 Triller Avenue taken back in the 1920's. By the 1980's all the houses for half a block had been torn down and replaced by a 22 story apartment building.

       In 1924 the family purchased a house at 40 Brumell Avenue in the Baby Point district. This meant for Linton going to school at Humbercrest Public School on St. Mark's Road. It was only a half block if you walked up the old Beltline Railway right-of-way which ran behind the houses.

       The favourite baseball playing area was the vacant field belonging to the Humbercrest Church at the corner of Brumell Avenue and Baby Point Road. Linton’s best friend was Herb Rogers who lived down the street.

       Linton’s parents had purchased land on Baby Point Crescent as far back as 1915 and were holding it until they could build a much larger house. So in 1930/1 they completed this new house and moved to it from Brumell Avenue. Linton’s friends at this time were Jack Leslie, Jack Ledger and Bob McMillan. A photograph of the house at 40 Brumell Avenue and the house at 11 Baby Point Crescent taken in 1994 are in my files.

       The closest place Linton could attend High School was Runnymede Collegiate on Jane Street. However it was not getting good reports at that time so arrangements were made for Linton to attend University of Toronto Schools at Bloor Street and Spadina Avenue. Linton played basketball on the Junior and then the Senior teams earning his UTS letters. He also was in the signal corp of the school cadets and because of this interest joined the Militia Signals.

       However a serious problem struck the family in 1935 when Linton's father Aubrey Love suffered a severe heart attack. This was brought on by worries about his business during the height of the depression. No money was coming in and so Linton left school in the middle of Grade 12 and started a job as office boy with Howard Smith Paper Mills in downtown Toronto.

       While at Baby Point Crescent Linton met Betty Bolton and they started playing tennis together regularly at Baby Point Tennis Club across from the house. As Betty was a star basketball player for Runymede Collegiate they always met at school games. This relationship grew into "going steady" which in the end resulted in their marriage in 1938.

       After they were married, Betty and Linton lived for the summer in an apartment on the north-west corner of King St. and Dowling Ave. This was in the Parkdale district of Toronto. It was a convenient location as Linton was working downtown for Howard Smith Paper Mills and could catch the King streetcar. Betty was working for French Ivory Products, a company owned by Linton's father and located at Dowling Ave. and Queen St. By the fall they were able to rent a small apartment at 1475 King St. west on the south side of King St. just west of Dowling Ave. This was a nice location as you could see the lake from the living room windows. In the files are photographs of both these buildings taken in 1994.

       Linton had volunteered to go overseas during the 2nd World War and Betty was expecting the arrival of Carole Jean. So they purchased a house at 20 Riverview Gardens in York Twp..,located just west of Jane St. and running north from Bloor St. The transaction was on 27 May 1942 Instrument # 268666 Plan 2714 lot 25. A copy of the deed and the Land Abstract Ledger Sheet are in the files. This house was sold 12 May 1961 when Linton's job took them to Midland, Ontario. Copy of this deed is also in the file.

       When Linton returned from overseas he resigned from Howard Smith Paper Mills and joined his father at French Ivory Products as Sales Manager. The firm got into serious financial troubles in 1955 and had to be sold at a big loss. Linton accepted a job as Sales Manager with Midland Industries whose plant was in Midland, Ontario but sales office was in Toronto. By 1960 Linton was asked to take over as General Manager which meant moving to Midland.

       They purchased land in Midland, Ontario situated on Little Lake and custom built their home moving in 1 October 1961. The deed for the land was Instrument # 131802 dated 6 April 1961 registered 2 May 1961. Copies of the deed and Land Abstract Ledger are in the files.

       Betty and Linton sold the Muskoka property they had inherited from Linton's father, Martin Aubrey Love. This was Instrument # 163044 5 acres part of lot 20 concession "E" Medora Twp., Muskoka Lakes, deed dated 23 October 1981 registered 30 October 1981. Copy of deed is in the files.

       Betty had her first stroke in 1985 which left her right side paralyzed. In order to have a suitable house in a warmer climate for the winter that would accommodate Betty's wheelchair they purchased a house at 941 Leeward Way in Palm Harbor, Florida.        After Betty died on 19 June 1990 Linton made arrangements to sell the house at 460 Cornell Drive in Midland. Sale was not closed until 6 June 1991 Instrument # 11351409 Simcoe County. Copy of deed and Land Abstract Ledger sheet are in the files.

       Linton purchased a condominium at Lighthouse Point in Collingwood, Ontario, 416 Mariner's Way. Instrument # 177742 dated 3 July 1990. Copy of deed is in the file

                            The family was living at 20 Riverview Gardens in the Jane-Bloor area so when LARRY started school it was at Humbercrest Public School on St. Marks Road. He was a member of the Humbercrest Cubs and then later of the Scouts. His closest friend while living there was Ken Webb who lived just up the street. In 1961 the family moved to Midland, Ontario and that is where Larry started High School at Midland Secondary. He became a good skier and was a member of the school ski team. After Grade 12 Larry decided to continue his education at Ryerson Polytechnical School in Toronto. This meant having to board in Toronto so he lived in several different locations with other students for 3 years. He received his Diploma for Chemical Engineering but decided to continue with a degree course at Waterloo Lutheran University in Waterloo, Ontario. Here he spent 2 years and received his degree in Business and Economics. During that time Larry received a $1000 scholarship from I.B.M. While he was at University he spent the summers working in Calgary and Edmonton for Pacific Petroleum Co. So it was natural that after he graduated he accepted their offer of a permanent job in their Sales Department, Accounting Section in Calgary. After a few years of apartment living Larry decided to purchase a house. It was at 6211 Lewis Drive in the southwest section of Calgary. By this time his job at Petro Canada (who had purchased Pacific Petroleum) was Economic Analyst. Unfortunately the oil industry (as well as most other industries) hit a huge depression in the late 1980's and huge numbers of people were laid off including Larry. The oil industry purposely laid off more people than they could operate without. Then they hired back many of these same people as consultants, including Larry. In this way they were free from giving fringe benefits but it left those people in a very unsatisfactory position. Finally even this ended and Larry was left to struggle on his own. As of this date in 2003 LARRY is working for a philatelic catalogue firm in Calgary.
