RENA B. whose family name we don't know was the widow of HENRY R. RITTENHOUSE who had died 29 years previosly. She had written her Will on 30 April 1927 and died 7 months later. It was probated on 5 November 1927. They only had one son JACOB B. RITTENHOUSE, so RENA left her entire estate to him. She also appointed him sole Executor. When the estate was appraised it was valued at $25,080.56 made up of stocks, bonds, cash and a very small inventory of personal goods. JACOB had to pay $689.10 Inheritance Tax.

MRS. JOSHUA HOUSER Word has been received by Mrs. Wesley Moyer of the death of her sister-in-law, Mrs. Joshua Houser which occurred on Wednesday at her home in Wolcott, New York. Mrs Houser, who was in her 80th year was formerly well known in Vineland, having with her late husband operated the "Independent" telephone exchange in the community before its amalgamation with the Bell system. Mrs. Houser is survived by her son Cecil and daughter Flossie both of Wolcott, and a sister, Miss Annie Moyer of St. Catharines. Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon at Wolcott.

Not far from Port Colborne and to the west there rises a steep, conically formed from the summit of which one may easily see the American shore on the south and the spray from the Falls of Niagara at the distance of many miles to the Northeast. This elevation was known to the pioneers as "The Sugar Loaf' and the locality for miles around was known everywhere as the Sugar Loaf Settlement. , 18830 A great grandfather of the settlement is the venerable Mr. William Michener. He was born in 1804, near the village of Doylestown, Bucks Co in the State of Pennsylvania and came to this country with his mother when he was thirteen years old. The story in his own words, in the course of which it will be observed that he makes words now almost obsolete even in the States.
"I jedge" said the gentleman, 'It is nigh onto 73 years sence we sot out for Canada. We traveled 400 miles, my mother and me, with a span of horses and a wagin. Theer w'a't not roads worth mentioning and when we got as far as Buffalo the only means to cross the river was a scow manned by four hands. It took 28 days to come here. Buffalo w'a'nt of much account then. From Main Street to the lake was a marsh. I can rec'lect only one store and one tavern, but perhaps this was on account of the burning of the houses by the British during the war.
The only road to the "Sugar Loaf' ran along the lake shore to Point Abino, which was then occupied by Obadiah and Nathan Dennis, two Quakers from the states. A good few Pennsylvania Dutch came too about the same time. Some of the original settlers, Abraham Neff, Christian Kinsely, Christian Babitz, Aaron Doan, the Wintermutes, the Vanderveers and the Perlets. The Wintermutes belonged to the Butlers Rangers. John, Benjamin, Abraham and Peter got to Canada all safe, but another brother got starved to death on the way.
Prices and taxes were both low. Wheat was five shilling a bushel and pork from fifteen shillings to a pound currency a hundred weight. Taxes wa'n't much, about $2.50 on 200 acres, and cowes were assessed at three pence or six pence each. We didn't have a municipal council in this part of the Niagara Deestick in them days and the schoolmaster boarded 'round. We were proud to have a log house school with a fireplace that had a stick chimney. It cost us from twelve to fourteen York shillings a year to eddicate each child. For a long time the only gristmill was Streets' at the falls and we used to join with a neighbor when we went to the mill. We took two canoes, lashed them together, put boards across and piled the bags on top. We paddled this way to Chippawa Creek and then carried the stuff past the rapids two or three miles to and from the mill. Other times we just slung a bag across a horse's back and tramped thru the woods. Elections were lively them days. The deestick elections sometimes got over in one day, but if the canadate who was behind at the close of the day paid a guinea, he could have the polls kept open another day, and this could be done a second time. When there wa'n,t any importance about an election we just divided the house, a dn there used to be great fun apulling men from side to the other. I said things were cheap then; but I should have said they were scarce too. Nancy Leper or Wintermute had to live for months on nothing but fish; and during the war salt got as high as $50.00 a barrel. Jonathan Doan, who moved west to Yannouth Township under Quaker settlement, paid $100.00 for two barrels in Pennsylvanny for the use of the Yarmouth settlers. On the whole we enjoyed life, although we had to work pretty hard. When we couldn't go to the mill, we just put some Indian com into the hollow end of a stump, or a short log set up and ponded it with a heavy piece of wood on the end of a spring pole-we called this a "hominy stumper". Sometimes we had to pound the grain with a club." Although Mr. Michener is 86 years of age, the globe continues--·'He is comparatively hale in body and his mental faculties are almost unimpaired. He is the father of thirteen children, five sons and eight daughters and his living descendents--grand and great grandchildren--number nearly 100. Although mechanically inclined there were few houses in the district that did not possess several specimens of his handicraft in the shape of spinning wheels, churns, cupboards, bookcases, wheelbarrows etc. No man in the old "Sugar Loaf Settlement" is more highly respected or more worthy of the large measure of respect he receives. Naturally shrewd and intelligent, Mr Michener in his advanced years is now able to look back upon a well-spent life individually and to deduce many sage conclusions from the retrospect in contrast with things as they are today. He is the oldest male representative of those settled in this part of the "Niagara District" and those who know him best sincerely trust that he may long retain this distinction.

I didn't know my great aunt Hattie Rittenhouse nee Dohn, was married such a short time. She used to come to visit her sister, my grandmother Elsie Booker, a hard working fanner's wife, and would be dressed in lovely clothes & wearing makeup. The only new clothes on the fann came from the rich relatives in Dunnville. Gr. Aunt Hattie taught us to play canasta, which was popular in the late 40's. Cards were frowned upon by my grandma as she adhered to her Methodist religion through all the troubles she endured. Great aunt Hattie was divorced which was a taboo subject in those days.

GEORGE BOOKER, by Mrs. E. McArthur, c.1970
George Webster Booker at the age of 23 years, went to homestead at Snowflake, Manitoba in 1898. In 1901 he returned to South Cayuga, Ont., his birthplace, and married Elsie May Dohn of Dunnville, Ont., on Dec.25th.
They came west the following March and settled on his homestead, SE21-1-10. As a good initiation for his bride, when crossing a slough near Snowflake the tongue of the wagon came down and stuck in the ground. Elsie had to get out in her long skirts and fur cape which were thoroughly soaked.
The house George and Elsie lived in was formerly a store owned by Fred Milljour. The building has been added to at various times and is the present home of their son, Wilbur. Their family of eight sons and three daughters are scattered from British Columbia to Ontario.
George and Elsie were both very active in church and community. They had four sons who served in the Armed Forces in the last war (WW2).
They retired from the farm in 1946 and moved to Snowflake.They had many ups and downs throughout their sixty years of married life, one of them being in March of 1920 when George caught his right hand in the gears of the windmill. The loss of his hand was a great handicap. The children inherited their love of sports from their father and love of hunting from their mother who could handle a .22 rifle.
The children of this union are: Gertrude (Mrs. Elgin McArthur), Leslie Bernice of Indian Head, Sask., Violet Orpha (Mrs. Wm. Hillman), Albert Dohn of Darlingford, Verne Stanley, Roy George, Clarence Wesley, all of British Columbia, Eldon Michael, Mattice Bay, Ont., Florence Winnifred (Mrs. Wm. Bowden) of Winnipeg, Wilbur Lome, John William, Star City, Sask.; all are of Snowflake unless otherwise stated.
They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Dec.25th,1961.George passed away Dec.4th, 1964. Wilbur farms the original homestead with his wife Lillian and family. Florence and Bill Bowden were farming S 12-1-10 until selling out in1966 and moving to Winnipeg. This farm was purchased by Bob and Rae Rinn who are now residing there.

GEO. WEBSTER BOOKER. After a lengthy illness, George Webster Booker passed away in Crystal City Memorial Hospital on Dec.4,1964. Mr. Booker was born in Cayuga, Ontario in1875. He came west to Manitoba in 1898and settled in the Snowflake district. In 1907 [sic] he married the former Elsie Dohn of Dunnville, Ontario. He fanned until his retirement in 1946. Mr. Booker was one of the founders of the Methodist Church in Snowflake and served on the Church Board for many years. He was Superintendent of the Sunday School for 40 years. He was an ardent fan of baseball and curling in his retirement. Besides his loving wife Elsie, two brothers, Bernice of Bradwell, Sask, and Mark of Snowflake, he is survived by 11 children: Mrs. R. E. McArthur (Gertie), Mrs. W. Bowden, (Florence), Verne, Roy, and Wilbur all of Snowflake, Leslie of Indian Head, Sask, Mrs. W. Hillman (Violet) of Portage la Prairie, Albert of Darling ford, Clarence of Vancouver, BC, Eldon of Mattice, Ont, and Jack of Omega, Sask. A largely attended funeral service was conducted by Rev. Rekken on Monday, Dec. 7 in Snowflake United Church with Graham's Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The honorary pallbearers were W. E. Findlay, G. Maxwell, A. Shaver, S. Headrick, and J. Gower. Active pallbearers were four grandsons, Bob McArthur, Bryan and Clare Bowden and Dennis Hillman; two nephews, Earle and Walter Booker. Interment was in Snowflake Cemetery.

"Our second dear old lady is Mrs. George Booker (nee Elsie Dohn). She was born on May 13th, 1880, in South Cayuga, Ont. She married George W. Booker on Dec.25th, 1901, in Dunnville, Ont., coming to Manitoba. the following spring and settling on section 26-1-10, now the home of her son Wilbur and his family.
They farmed here until their retirement, when they had a new home built in Snowflake in 1946 and retired to town. Now that they could take life a little easier, they made trips to Sask., Ont., and B.C. Mr. and Mrs. Booker celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary in Dec.1961. Mr. Booker passed away on Dec. 4th, 1964. Mrs. Booker was an active member of the Woman's Missionary Society and the Ladies Aid of the United Church. Mrs. Booker has a friendly, hospitable disposition and although she suffered a stroke on July 5,1965, and has to spend a lot of time in bed, she still welcomes her old friends and is very happy to have them call. She is being cared for by her daughter Violet who moved with herhusband Bill, from Portage back to Snowflake last fall so that Mrs. Booker could be cared for in her own home where she wished to be. Mr. and Mrs. Booker had a family of eight boys and three girls: Gertrude (Mrs. R. E. McArthur), Snowflake; Leslie, Indian Head, Sask.; Violet (Mrs. W. A. Hillman), Portage; Albert, Darlingford, Verne and Roy, Snowflake; Clarence, Vancouver, BC; Eldon, Mattice, Ont; Florence (Mrs. W. Bowden) Winnipeg; Wilbur, Snowflake; and Jack, Star City ,Sask. Mrs. Booker has 25 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.

ELSIE MA Y BOOKER. Mrs. Elsie Booker, widow of the late George Booker, passed away on Oct.20,1968 in Morden Hospital. She was in her 89th year. Mrs. Booker was a member of the United Church. She was an active worker in all the women's organizations of the church. Mrs. Booker is survived by a sister Mrs. Winnie Dohn of Toronto and a brother Verne Dohn of Middletown, Ohio; three daughters: Mrs. R. E. McArthur Mrs. W. H. Hillman of Snowflake and Mr. & Mrs. W. A. Bowden of Winnipeg; eight sons, Leslie of Indian Head, Eldon of Mattice, ON, Clarence of Vancouver, Jack of Star City, SK, Albert of Darlingford, Verne, Roy, and Wilbur of Snowflake, MH. Verne had cataracts by the age of 2 and could not see very well. At that time doctors couldn't help him except prescribe glasses to try to help his vision. He didn't receive any schooling and at home was not given many responsibilities.
He never learned to drive a vehicle. He helped a little on the farm and helped dry dishes. He seemed to be treated as a mentally challenged person and lived with his parents until they died. Verne said the highlight in his life was moving to Portage La Prairie in later years and living alone. He learned to cook, hook rugs, show videos, dance and look after the elderly. He built birdhouses and painted them. He has been quoted as saying "If mother could see me now she wouldn't believe it."

VERNE STANLEY BOOKER. Peacefully on January 14, 1995 at the Health Sciences Center, Winnipeg, Verne Stanley Booker passed away at the age of 83 years as a result of injuries suffered from a motor vehicle accident in Portage la Prairie on December 21,1994. Verne was born [Birth Date Confidential] in Snowflake, Manitoba. The majority of his life was spent in Snowflake where he participated in many community activities such as skating and curling. He enjoyed helping on the family farm. In October 1984 he moved to Portage and became a member of the Lions Prairie Manor Adult Day Care Program. The church played a very important part in Verne's life. While living at Snowflake he faithfully attended the United Church and took in various activities there. This dedication continued at the Lion's Manor in Portage. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Elsie, as well as five brothers Roy, Albert, Leslie, Wilbur, and Eldon (Mike). He leaves to mourn his passing sisters Gertie McArthur, Violet Hillman, Florence (Bill) Bowden, brothers Clarence and Jack (Velma), sisters-in-laws Elyda, Grace, Lillian and Nelly as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. A memorial service was held at the Lion's Prairie Manor, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba on Wednesday, Jan. 18th, 1995 at 2 pm with Rev. Don McIntyre officiating. Interment of ashes will follow at a later time at Snowflake Cemetery. If friends so desire contributions in remembrance may be made to the Lion's Prairie Manor, 24-9th St., SE, Portage la Prairie, MAN.RIN3B4 May 16,1995. Because of inclement weather and road conditions, the committal service for the late Verne Booker was held in the Snowflake United Church on Sat. May12th at 2 pm. The Rev. Laurie Simpson of Manitou conducted the service. Joan Wheeler was organist. Family members and friends shared in a lunch provided by the UCW of Snowflake and a time of visiting in the Snowflake Curling Rink afterwards.

He was also an active church person, who loved people especially children. Left to mourn his passing, besides his wife Irma are 3 sisters, Gertie and her husband Elgin McArthur of Morden, Violet and her husband Bill Hillman of Pilot Mound, Florence and her husband Bill Bowden of Winnipeg and 7 brothers, Leslie and his wife Grace of White Rock, B.C., Albert and his wife Elyda of Morden, Verne of Portage la Prairie, Clarence and his wife Rebecca of Vancouver B.C., Eldon and his wife Nellie of Kapuskasing, Ont., Wilbur and his wife Lillian of Portage la Prairie and Jack and his wife Velma of Star City, Sask. He also leaves to mourn Morley and his wife Carole of Edmonton, Cheryl and her husband Bill McKitrick of Crystal City and many other nieces and nephews. Funeral service was held Tuesday June 10, 1986 in Snowflake United Church with Rev. Kerry Craig officiating and Landon Booker as soloist. Interment in the Snowflake Cemetery. Pallbearers were Morley Handford, Bill McKitrick, Brian Bowden, Robert McArthur, Greg Booker and Calvin Gibson.

"Jessie Kathryn Paine was born in Illinois in June 1880. She was youngest of 6 children born to John Paine and Harriet Hay. Jessie was practically raised by an older sister, Grace, as their mother was stricken with dementia at a relatively young age and would wander away from the house. Jessie spoke of having to, as a very small child, run after her mother and bring her back home.
"She also spoke of an older brother, John, who had died as a very young child in a particularly shocking manner. The mother, Harriet, was doing laundry outside and there was lye in a large barrel for making soap. The child mistook the lye for drinking water, drank a glass and died before her eyes.
"Jessie's oldest sister, Anna, spent at least part of her adult life in an institution. The family story was that she was a teacher and had taken a group of children on a summer picnic on a bright sunny day, got sun stroke, and was never right afterwards. There was also a story of a jilted lover, and however intriguing that story might be, we have no other information, including who jilted whom. Today, she would likely have been diagnosed with severe depression or perhaps schizophrenia.
