THOMAS JEFFERSONH LUTMAN was killed at the battle of Fredericksburg II, May 3, 1863. He was in the 1st Company,Washington Artillery of Louisiana and, according to one of the officers, was killed on the same day as Sergeant West. When the 6th Maine breached the stone wall, often seen in a photograph of May 6, 1863, they came up Marye's Hill behind the embrasure in which T.J. was firing. Several of the Federals were killed ("blown to atoms"). Apparently the Confederates surrendered but after that T.J. was killed, along with two others. One was severely wounded and then he also died.

Undoubtedly the remains of T. J. were lying up on the hill when the photo was taken. At this time the area was briefly under Union control but was soon recaptured by the Confederate forces.

"Braver and more chivalrous men never fought"

                            T. J. was listed as from Carlisle, PA. He was said to have enlisted in the Confederate Army after the battle of Antietam. He was a substitute for a certain Zebal of New Orleans.

                            T. J.'s grave cannot be identified. He is an "unknown soldier". The ladies of Fredericksburg, in 1866, collected all of the bodies of dead Confederates and had them buried together in two places, the Confederate Cemetery of Fredericksburg and the Confederate Cemetery of Spotsylvania. Only a few are identified. Even fewer of the dead Federals are identified.

  204. JOSEPH DETWEILER7 RITTENHOUSE (MARTIN6, NICHOLAS5, WILLIAM DEWEES4, NICHOLAS (CLAES)3, WILHELM2 RÜDDINGHUYSEN, CLAES1 RETTINGHAUSEN) (#22498) was born in Germantown, Phil. Co. PA, USA 09 October 1776. JOSEPH died before 1835 in Germantown, Phil. Co. PA, USA, at age unknown.

He married MARY (POLLY) KNERR 25 April 1793 in St. Paul's Ch. Philadelphia, Pa.. (MARY (POLLY) KNERR is #22499.) MARY was born 13 March 1766 in Philadelphia Co., Pa. USA. MARY died 12 July 1835 in Germantown, Phil. Co. PA, USA, at age 69. Her body was interred 15 July 1835 in Upper Burying Gr., Germantown, Pa..

When MARY KNERR, widow of JOSEPH DETWEILER RITTENHOUSE, died on 12 July 1835 she left a Will which she had written on 7 March 1834. She ordered her estate to be divided into two equal shares. One share was to go to her daughter SUSAN, married to SILAS LEVERING. The other share was to be invested and the interest was to be paid to her other daughter, MARY, wife of JOHN ALEZANDER. However it explicitly states this in no way is to come under the power of her husband JOHN ALEXANDER. When daughter MARY died, the capital was to be divided equally among any lawful children she may have at that date. She appointed her brother JOHN KNERR and son-in-law SILAS LEVERING as Executors.

When they filed the return of inventory on 2 October 1835 it was valued at $2,438.57. Among her possessions were the medical books and instruments left to her by her son JOSEPH who had died in 1832.

This Will file is #126 Book 11 Page 497 and is held by the Register of Wills in Philadelphia, Pa.

JOSEPH DETWEILER RITTENHOUSE deserted his wife, MARY KNERR and their 3 children, SUSAN, MARY and JOSEPH. about 1804 and was never heard from again. This was disclosed when his brothers were acting as Executors of his father's Will. He had been married about 10 years and was about 28 years old.

This is all shown in the Orphan's Court file OC 15,549 held by the Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa.

JOSEPH DETWEILER RITTENHOUSE and MARY (POLLY) KNERR had the following children:

       481      i.  SUSAN8.

ii.  MARY (#30381). She married JOHN ALEXANDER date unknown. (JOHN ALEXANDER is #30382.)

iii.  JOSEPH (#26227) was born in Germantown, Phil. Co. PA, USA 06 March 1798. JOSEPH died 25 December 1832 in Germantown, Phil. Co. PA, USA, at age 34. His body was interred after 25 December 1832 in Upper Burying Gr., Germantown, Pa..

On 23 December 1832, DR, JOSEPH RITTENHOUSE must have been extremely ill, even though he was only 34 years old. He wrote a three line memo stating he wished his mother, MARY KNERR, to have all of his property. JOSEPH died 2 days later on 25 December 1832. This memo had to be declared valid as there had not been two witnesses at the signing. John Knerr affirmed that he had been present when Joseph had written this memo so the Court declared it valid. Actually there was very little in the way of goods and chattels and no real estate. The inventory was valued at $1,142. Not surprisingly he left a set of medical books and some medical instruments.

This Administration file is #164 Book "O" Page 83 Index A-164-1833 and is held by the Register of Wills in Philadelphia, Pa.

  205. ELIZABETH7 RITTENHOUSE (MARTIN6, NICHOLAS5, WILLIAM DEWEES4, NICHOLAS (CLAES)3, WILHELM2 RÜDDINGHUYSEN, CLAES1 RETTINGHAUSEN) (#22506) was born in Roxborough Twp, Phil. Co., PA 18 March 1779. ELIZABETH died 1850 at age 71.

She married THOMAS UMSTED date unknown. (THOMAS UMSTED is #22505.) THOMAS died 1846 at age unknown.

ELIZABETH RITTENHOUSE and THOMAS UMSTED had the following children:

       482      i.  ARNOLD8.

          483   ii.  CATHARINE.

484  iii.  WILLIAM was born 18 January 1800

  206. JACOB DETWEILER7 RITTENHOUSE (MARTIN6, NICHOLAS5, WILLIAM DEWEES4, NICHOLAS (CLAES)3, WILHELM2 RÜDDINGHUYSEN, CLAES1 RETTINGHAUSEN) (#22507) was born in Roxborough Twp, Phil. Co., PA 09 March 1783. JACOB died 17 April 1843 in U. Prov. Twp, Montgomery Co. PA, at age 60. His body was interred after 17 April 1843 in Providence Menn Cem. Collegeville, Pa..

He married MARY REINER 1804. (MARY REINER is #22508.) MARY was born 10 September 1784. MARY died 17 April 1874 in U. Prov. Twp, Montgomery Co. PA, at age 89. Her body was interred after 17 April 1874 in Providence Menn Cem. Collegeville, Pa..

MARY REINER, widow of JACOB DETWEILER RITTENHOUSE, wrote her Will on 1 September 1873 and actually died on 17 April 1874. she directed in her Will that all her household good be sold after her decease except those specifically bequeathed as follows. To her son DAVID R. RITTENHOUSE, she left $450 plus the bed, bedding and clockfrom her bedroom. She pointed out she was doing this for DAVID "because of his working over age,".

Her clothing and crockery were to divided "share and share alike" among her daughters. Everything else from the sale of her belongings was to be divided equally among all her children. She appointed her sons DAVID and HENRY Executors.

MARY REINER had 6 shares in the Farmers and Merchants Bank of Manixville and 3 United States Bonds. There is no mention of real estate so I assume the property had transferred to the sons when the father died. When DAVID and HENRY filed the inventory on 17 April 1875, it amounted to $4,629.26. There were many children to share this amount but no distribution record in the file.

This is Will file RW #22,508 and is held by the Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa.

       SOURCE of INFORMATION

HISTORY of the RITTENHOUSE FAMILY by Daniel K. Kolb published 1894 in Germantown, Philadelphia, Pa. This is one of the several books and pamphlets published by Daniel K. Kolb.

Three of the children of JACOB DETWEILER RITTENHOUSE filed a petition in the Orphan's Court asking for the appointment of a guardian. They were WILLIAM, ELIZABETH and ANN and as they were minors but above the age of 14 years, they filed the petition on their own behalf. These appointments of guardians were important in protecting the interests of children in their parent's estate.

In the case of RACHEL and SAMUEL they were minors under the age of 14 years. So their mother, MARY REINER, had to file the petition for a guardian to be appointed. She recommended Abraham as a suitable person.

These petitions are in File OC 14,809 and OC 15,818 in the Orphan's Court records held by the Montgomery County Archives in Norristown. Pa. No date is shown but it must have been after 17 April 1843.because that is the date the father died.

The inventory of JACOB's personal possessions, "goods and chattels" was taken on 23 May 1843 and filed with the Court on 25 may 1843. It totalled $3,135.20. By law at that date, the widow was allowed to retain whatever goods she chose up to the value of $300. These detailed inventories are not only very interesting but give an idea of the value of goods in those days. It is true that if the appraiser kept the values low, the widow's $300 would go much further. There was no estate transfer tax back then so it didn't really matter to anybody except the heirs.

For instance he had 3 horses, a bay horse which they valued at $100 but the Grey horse only at $25 and a black horse at $15. Obviously they took into consideration the condition and age of the horses. A mare and colt were valued at $78. Household goods such as a corner cupboard, only at $6. The low value on spinning wheels was a surprise. 5 of them were valued only at $1,50. The appraiser had to include every nut and bolt which makes the inventory in this case 4 legal pages long.

On 3 May 1843 the widow, MARY REINER, filed a notice to the Court that she renounced all her rights of administration in favour of her 3 sons, HENRY R, DAVID R. and Martin Rittenhouse, so they were appointed as Administrators.

On 21 August 1843 the widow MARY REINER and her 11 children submitted a petition to the Orphan's Court to deal with two properties JOSEPH DETWEILER RITTENHOUSE had owned. One was where they had been living, in Upper Providence Township, Montgomery County, Pa. and the other was in Limerick Township, Also in Montgomery County. It was immediately obvious the propety could not be divided fairly among all the heirs so it would have to be sold. The Court appointed 7 men to make the appraisal. They were John Dismant, Henry Wismer, Benjamin Bean, Charles Tyson, John Rambo, Samuel Hallman and John Thomas. The land contained 98 and three quarter acres and they appraised it at $59 an acre. So the total came to $5,826.25.

Three of JACOB's brothers offered to buy it a the appraised amount which would save the trouble of an auction. However there was a mortgage outstanding of $1,581.29 which had to be paid off. So the net amount to go to the estate was $4,244.96. of this the widow, MARY REINER, was entitled to her one third dower right which amounted to $1,414.99. the amount going to each child was $257.27 to be paid one year from 20 November 1843. When Mary Reiner died each child would receive $128.63.

All that went off fairly smoothly but when it came to the second property in Limerick Township, everything got considerably more confused. The 7 appraisers found the land contained 98 acres and 40 perches. They appraised it at $50 per acre. This amounted to a value of $5,109. But then it was disclosed that on 1 April 1843 JACOB RITTENHOUSE had closed a deal for this land with JAMES YERGEY. It was in writing but it hadn't been finalized when JACOB died on 17 April 1843, just over 2 weeks later. So they summoned everybody involved to a Court session. What happened there is not included in the files that have survived.

I would speculate that JAMES YERGEY had his contract honoured but then could not pay for it. It was not until 6 October 1947 that the Court ordered the property to be sold at auction. I will quote the file to give you a feeling for the way these things were handled. " After first giving due and timely public notice by hand bills and advertisements for at least four successive weeks. They did on Monday the eighth of November 1847 on the premises at one o'clock in the afternoon expose the real estate in the said order more fully described to Public Auction and Outcry and sold the same to William R. Rittenhouse and Charles Tyson for the price or sum of forty-five dollars per acre for a total of $4,470.".

All of the above is contained in Orphan's Court Files OC 15,549 and RW 15,268 which are held by Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa.

ISAAC RITTENHOUSE possessed a great deal of ingenuity. He was the inventor of and made the first swelled ax to force out the chips in felling trees. For awhile he followed farming in Montgomery Co., PA, near Hathoro but later he moved back to Germantown again, where he died in 1876.

ISAAC RITTENHOUSE in 1860 was living in Ward 21 in the City of Philadelphia. Pa. His occupation was "gentleman" and he owned considerable real estate which reflects the comments made above. His property was valued at $23,000 and personal goods at $1,000. His first wife SARAH BENNER had died in 1842, He had married PATIENCE MORRIS in 1844. She was still with ISAAC in 1860 as well as a young girl, ANNA NASH age 13 who may be a servant girl.

It is interesting to see that some of his sisters are living next door and that is probably property he owned. They were MARY 49, SARAH 46 and MARGARET 52. I don't have a record of a MARGARET among his sisters but I believe she probably is a sister. They each show valuation of their personal goods ar $3,000. All this is found in the Philadelphia City Census of 1860 Roll 1172 Book 1 Page

       The First of April

       By William S. Buck

Sketches and Legends of Montgomery County, Pa.

       Published in 1887

In reverting to my earlier years, among the amusing incidents that turn up are those associated with All Fools' day. as the first of April has so long been called. This periodical attempt at wit promotes jocularity and tends to a change in what otherwise might prove a more monotonous existence. It has been said that without blossoms there could be no fruit, and without song or music no animation, the same as shadow follows substance or echo sound. Nature that has furnished us. with wit, smiles. dimples and laughter, must have certainly thrown in merriment to make the measure good or rather our pleasure full. Al1 things have their time; the child that cries, the adult that growls, contribute to no one's happiness or good, and the gloomy become misanthropic only too often to commit suicide and help fill our hospitals, asylums and prisons. Jesting and merriment I know like other things are liable to abuse, which I do not advocate, yet when harmless they afford infinite delight and for the time tend to dispel the anxieties and troubles attending a fitful life.

The present blacksmith shop in the Willow Grove I know has stood there at least forty-five years, and in all that time for said purpose has been kept in constant use. About that long ago my first acquaintance with Isaac Rittenhouse commenced in it, who was so long its proprietor and therein carried on his trade. An excellent. energetic and industrious mechanic. a good neighbor, useful citizen, and as I shall show in the sequel relished a joke. I am pleased to say after having labored so diligently here with his hammer for nearly a quarter of a century he was enabled to retire and live for some time afterwards on a decent competency. He died near Germantown. the place of his nativity, somewhere about 1870. David Rittenhouse, the distinguished astronomer and mechanician (sic), was a relative. While he carried on his trade here he did an extensive business, keeping constantly employed journeymen and apprentices. In those days before general railroading, there was much more work for the smith than now, owing to the much greater number of teams on the road. to which must be added the several lines of stage coaches which made the Willow Grove their stopping and changing places.

Now among the employees of Isaac Rittenhouse there would likely to be occasionally found, as elsewhere, wags and jesters ready for any prank that would afford diversion. This was more likely the case from their being generally young men filled with the buoyant spirits of youth, and to relieve themselves would be ready to seize on anything for sport. How far this was promoted through the keen wit and jokes of their employer I will not take upon me to say, but of one thing I am sure, that Isaac Rittenhouse would never stoop to encourage or countenance anything dishonorable or unworthy a gentleman. I suspect that unknown to him, his journeymen and apprentices concluded to get up a bit of merriment for All Fools' day that should for this occasion come up to expectations.

Early one morning on the first of April, fully thirty-five years ago. I observed , while standing on the piazza of my father's house, a wagon suddenly stop on the turnpike bridge that here spans Round Meadow Run, and a man spring out and stoop as if he meant to take up something and then go on. In the course of a few minutes I noticed another do the same. At last by its repetition, I had my curiosity aroused as to the cause, and with this in view I went down the road to the bridge, about one hundred and sixty yards distant, and there I saw that a horse shoe nearly new had been securely nailed fast to one of the planks. It was ingeniously gotten up to impress the beholder that it had been lost, and by a number believed to bring to the finder good luck. So much for the magic shoe. The blacksmith shop spoken of was the only building near, and stood below it about fifty yards, which I entered. Here in the absence of Mr. Rittenhouse, I found a jovial party, journeymen and apprentices, in the highest glee on the general success of their April fooling. From the aforesaid I would now draw this moral : For that which costs nothing, reader, be not too eager or covetous, for in most cases it is liable to deceive and bring disappointment.

I have spoken of Mr. Rittenhouse's relish for jokes. I will relate an instance that afforded him pleasure for some time.. About the period I speak of there resided in the village a mechanic in leather, whom I shall call Jerry, noted for his self-esteem. Entering the smith shop one day a bill was paid him there by a neighbor for work done. Receiving the money he ascertained that he could not make the change. Turning to Isaac beside his anvil, he said, "Please give me two halves for this," and handed him a dollar note. The latter, after taking it, reached in his pocket and drew therefrom two half cents, which he placed in the former"s hand, saying, "I am happy to be thus enabled to accommodate you." Opening it in the presence of all, and seeing what was there, he found himself completely taken in.The roars of laughter that followed this joke could have been heard at a square's distance, to the great discomfiture and mortification of Jerry so brought down. Mr. Rittenhouse carried in triumph that one dollar note in his pocket for several months before he gave it back, and in that time when he would meet his victim he would shout.," Jerry. do you want any more one dollar bills changed for halves?" The exceeding and well known vanity of the latter tended to give it the more notoriety.

In 1870 ISAAC RITTENHOUSE, age 74, and his wife PATIENCE MORRIS, age 73, were still living in Ward 21, Philadelphia City. He was an extremely wealthy man with real estate valued at $28,000 and personal goods at $2,000. A HARRIET MATTISON, age 50, was living with them. It is possible she was a married, but widowed, daughter. Shown in the Philadelphia City 1870 census Roll 1409 Book 1 page 463.

ISAAC RITTENHOUSE wrote his will on 20 July 1876 and died 7 days later. It was an extremely long and complicated Will which shows ISAAC retained his intelligent and alert mind until he died when over 80 years old. The Will actually took 7 legal size sheets to type and is far too detailed to repeat it all here. However I will try to give the main details. By the time he died the Germantown area where he lived, was incorporated as the 21 Ward of the City of Philadelphia. His first wife SARAH BENNER and the mother of his 3 sons, had died in 1842 and he then had married PATIENCE MORRIS.

So ISAAC bequeathed to "my beloved wife, Patience, all my silverware with the initial M and $900 in cash. Also the house we now occupy, with the yard and garden thereto attached, with the woodshed and chicken house, and the water privileges, as we now enjoy them and the right to a passageway of twenty feet leading into the road which leads into Rittenhouse Street. And all my household goods, kitchen furniture, for and for the full term of her natural life, free from taxes which are to be paid by my two sons CHARLES and SAMUEL. Also the net income from my entire estate and payment of $165 annually by my son PETER and $100 annually by each of my sons, CHARLES and SAMUEL,."

ISAAC then went into great detail as to the division of his property in Germantown. Part of it was to be sold and the proceeds to go into his estate. Part of it was to be divided between two of the sons CHARLES and SAMUEL and for their use as long as they kept it in good repair. The exact descriptions of the divisions was all in detail.

Then he left a 13 acre farm in Moreland Township, Montgomery County to his nephew JOHN S. RITTENHOUSE. ISAAC's son PETER and wife ELIZABETH had evidently been living on this land. So the condition was that they could continue to live there as long as they kept it in good repair. And PETER had to pay his step-mother PATIENCE MORRIS $165 per year in cash.

ISAAC appointed his brother SAMUEL RITTENHOUSE and his friend (and nephew by marriage) WILLIAM STEVENS, as Executors. HARRIET MATTISON, ROBERT THOMAS and SAMUEL RITTENHOUSE were witnesses.

The Will is held by the Montgomery County Archives in Norristown, Pa. It is RW #34,866. This document is a certified copy of the original Will and is dated 11 June 1920. It probably had to be filed at the time the sons died and the original estate was finally settled. The original Will is probably filed with the Register of Wills in Philadelphia. Pa.

In 1850 JOHN RITTENHOUSE age 50 and his wife HANNAH UNRUH age 48 were living in Germantown, Philadelphia County, Pa. He was a Storekeeper and they had 5 children, LAVINIA 25, SUSAN 23, JOHN 18, SAMUEL 14 and JOSEPHINE 9. John's brother SAMUEL was also living with them and he was 48. From the 1850 Germantown Pa. census.

JOHN RITTENHOUSE's early life was devoted to his business, in which he developed great mechanical aptitude, receiving therefor from the Franklin Institute of Philadelphia a silver medal bearing the inscription:

       Reward of Skill and Ingenuity

                      to

       J. RITTENHOUSE

       GERMANTOWN, PENNA.

1840 After withdrawing from active business he devoted his time and energies to furthering the cause of public education. In this he took an especial interest for thirty years. He was also for a long time one of the directors of the Bank of Germantown.

After the death of JOHN LIPPERT RITTENHOUSE in 1868, his widow HANNAH UNRUH, evidently took her daughter SUSANNA and her son-in-law William Stephens and her grandson John R. Stephens into her house to live. They are shown in the Germantown census for 1870. The reason I think it must have been the home of Hannah and John, is that the census shows her with property assessed at $75,000. William Stephens doesn't show any real estate owned and his personal goods were valued at $300.

Buried at the Mountain church on the 31st, where a large number of relatives and friends assembled to pay their last tribute of respect to a dear brother and friend who was a good example to us all. He leaves a widow (his second wife) and nine children"all grown" to mourn his departure, but they need not mourn as such who have no hope.                             Obituary of SARAH FRETZ wife of JOHN WISMER MOYER

From Herald of Truth - January 1, 1900

MOYER - Sister Sara Fretz Moyer was called from this life to her heavenly reward on the 30th of November, 1899, at the age of 77 years, 10 months and 13 days. She was afflicted much during the past two years, but bore patiently all her sufferings, always resigned to the all wise will of God. Her husband, John W. Moyer, to whom she was united in matrimony in 1868, preceded her, having "fallen asleep" several years ago. The funeral service and interment took place at the Mennonite meeting-house near Camden, Lincoln Co., Ont., near which place the sister resided. Many friends whose esteem and love she had won by her Christian example and motherly affection came together on this occasion. Christian love and fellowship, which binds hearts together in this life cannot be severed by death and the grave. Services conducted by John F. Rittenhouse and S. F. Coffman. Text, Matt. 25:21, "Enter thou into the joy of thy Lord."

FRETZ. On the evening of the 14th of July, 1895, at Campden, Lincoln Co., Ont., of heart disease, Sister Anna R. Fretz, daughter of Joseph Fretz, aged 67 y., 4 m. She was a member of the Mennonite church for a long time, and her place at meetings was seldom vacant when health permitted her to be there. She was called away by the Master very unexpectedly to the friends and neighbors, but we can see that when the Master calls we have to obey. She leaves two brothers and two sisters to mourn their loss. The remains were interred at the Mountain M. H. on the 17th, in the presence of a large number of friends and relatives. Funeral services were conducted at the house by John F. Rittenhouse and at the church by Gilbert Bearss, from 2 Sam. 20: 4, latter clause. Peace to her ashes.

  230. ANNA FRETZ7 RITTENHOUSE (MICHAEL CONRAD6, JOHN5, WILLIAM DEWEES4, NICHOLAS (CLAES)3, WILHELM2 RÜDDINGHUYSEN, CLAES1 RETTINGHAUSEN) (#142) was born in Hilltown Twp. Bucks Co. PA 15 March 1798. ANNA died 13 February 1880 in Southwold Twp, Elgin Co. Ont., at age 81. Her body was interred after 13 February 1880 in Straffordville Cem. Elgin Co..

She married ABRAHAM MOYER HUNSBERGER 13 February 1817 in Clinton Twp., Lincoln Co., ON. (ABRAHAM MOYER HUNSBERGER is #141.) ABRAHAM was born 28 June 1794 in Hilltown Twp. Bucks Co. PA. ABRAHAM was the son of CHRISTIAN HUNSBERGER SR. and AGNES DIERSTEIN MEYER. ABRAHAM died 24 December 1862 in Bayham Twp. Elgin Co. ON, at age 68. His body was interred after 24 December 1862 in Straffordville Cem. Elgin Co..

ABRAHAM HUNSBERGER was born on 28 June 1794 in Hilltown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. His father was Christian Hunsberger and his mother was Agnes Meyer.

ABRAHAM HUNSBERGER emigrated to Canada about 1800 with his father CHRISTIAN HUNSBERGER, his mother AGNES DIERSTEIN MEYER along with 1 brother and 6 sisters. They came from Hilltown Township, Montgomery County, Pa.

It is believed the family settled in Clinton or Louth Townships in Lincoln County at first. I cannot find any land records for them and as there was another Hunsberger family with the names of Christian and Abraham in the area, the records are confusing to follow.

Barbara Coffman in her book SAMUEL FRY THE WEAVER states that "cousins Christian and Agnes left for the Talbot District about 1810".

ABRAHAM would have been only 16 in 1810. He married ANNA RITTENHOUSE in 1817 and purchased his own land in 1827. He bought 100 acres from Henry Wismar. Copy of the deed in my file is dated 6 January 1827 recorded (Old Middlesex Numbers) 18 January 1827. Instrument # 865. The property was south 1/2 lot # 125, concession 6, Bayham Township, Elgin County on the south side of Talbot Road. This later became Straffordville. In my files are historic and modern maps showing the location.

ABRAHAM HUNSBERGER was a farmer and belonged to the Mennonite Church. However I can't find where there was a Mennonite congregation near their farm. That is probably why he became a Methodist as stated in the Moyer Family History by Rev. A. J. Fretz. See the excerpt from this book below.

ABRAHAM purchased 101 acres from Ezekial Forsythe. This was south 1/2 lot 126, Concession 6, Bayham Township, Elgin County. Copy of this deed in my file is dated 17 December 1827 recorded (Old Middlesex Numbers) 28 April 1828 Instrument # 991. Photographs taken in 1994 are also in my file as well as historic and modern maps showing the location.

ABRAHAM had applied for a Crown Land Grant. He received 200 acres which was Lot 122 Concession 6, Bayham Township, Elgin County. It was on the south side of Talbot Road (now in Straffordville). Copy of the original Crown Patent dated 3 December 1838 is in my files. Crown Patents are held by the Register of Patents located on Bay Street in Toronto. In my files are historic and modern maps showing the location.

In 1851 ABRAHAM sold 32 acres of the above property to Benjamin Garrett. Copy of the deed in my files is dated 29 July 1851 recorded 10 April 1856 Instrument # 1410. Then on 8 January 1861 he gave 1 acre to the Cemetery Association of Straffordville and that cemetery is where ABRAHAM and his wife ANNA RITTENHOUSE are buried. Their plots are # 122 and # 123. There are photographs in my files of the tombstones and cemetery. These were taken in 1994. Daughter Elizabeth is also buried there. She died at age 18. Location of the cemetery is shown on maps in my files.

An except from the Moyer Family History, by Rev. A. J. Fretz, first published in 1896 (page 88-89)

"In the year 1800 Abraham Hunsberger removed with his parents to Lincoln County, Ont., where the years of his boyhood and youth were spent. Some years later they removed to Bayham township, Elgin county, and settled on a homestead in the then backwoods. His early education had been exclusively in German and for a time he taught a German school, but later in life he learned also to read English, his 9-year-old son Enos being his tutor. He held the office of school trustee and in other ways took an active part in the educational interests of the community. Near the village of Straffordville (then called Sandy Town) he cleared and donated to the public an acre of ground for burial purposes a "God's Acre," free to all, regardless of their religious belief, and in which he himself lies buried. He contributed freely of his time and means for the opening up and improvement of new roads, not only in his capacity as Path Master, but often by getting up "Bees" for the purpose. He made it a rule to give three to five days of each year to the service of the poor. This time was largely devoted to soliciting contributions for, and alleviating the sufferings of those who had met with fire losses or other misfortunes, and he himself always gave liberally to every good cause. He was widely known for his hospitality, benevolence and honorable manner of dealing, and lived so truly pious a life that he had the confidence and esteem of all who knew him. He attended the Methodist church while living in Bayham, but to the last he had a feeling of deep sympathy and regard for the church of his fathers and of his own early years, and near the end of his life went 80 miles to the Moyer settlement at the "Twenty" to receive the Holy Sacrament from Mennonite hands."

An indenture dated 4 June 1872 is in my file, showing where widow ANNA RITTENHOUSE HUNSBERGER sold the part of the property included by Lot 125 and 126, for $600 Instrument # 5330 taken from Elgin County Deed Book.

I speculated where the children would have attended school. There was no Mennonite School in the area according to local historians I talked to, but there was the "SMUCK SCHOOL" just down the road less than a 1/2 mile. It was located on the north corner of Lot 14 Conmcession 5, Bayham Township, Elgin County. It was known as School # 12 and is very likely the school Susan Hunsberger attended and where her father may have taught.

The last words he spoke to me, he said, "I have considered all my things and I think I can make them no better.                             Obituary of EZRA RITTENHOUSE

Taken from the Gospel Herald July 1928

Rittenhouse. - Ezra Rittenhouse was born in Lincoln Co., Ont., Feb. 5, 1849. In early life he moved with his parents to Haldimand Co., where he resided until of age, when he returned to Lincoln Co. Here he was employed for some years. In 1875 he was united in marriage to Salome, daughter of Jacob and Susan Kratz (deceased). They resided on the Bishop Tilman Moyer farm for nearly thirty years where now is located the village of Vineland. In 1925 they celebrated with their friends the happy occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of their wedded life. Seven weeks previous to his death, which occurred on July 12 Sister Rittenhouse passed away very unexpectedly. His death was due to a paralytic stroke to which he succumbed in the course of thirty-six hours. After his conversion during the first series of meetings held in this district, Bro. Rittenhouse was active in the work of the Sunday school and Church for many years. His was interested in and supported the mission and educational work of the Church. His presence and fellowship will be missed, but we believe that the two lives which were so soon and so recently removed from us are united in the eternal fellowship which is promised those whose faith and trust was in our blessed Redeemer, Jesus Christ. Funeral services were held July 14, conducted by Bro. C. F. Derstine. Texts, I Cor. 15:17; Acts 1:3. Burial in the Vineland Cemetery.

HARVEY bequeathed all his property both real and personal to his wife RUTH SMITHSON. They did not have any children. He may have been a carpenter or electrician.

The real estate involved was a lot in Philadelphia with some buildings with a total appraisal of $4,300 There was an outstanding mortgage of $1,000.
