NICHOLAS RITTENHOUSE arrived in Germantown, Roxborough Township, Philadelphia County, Pa, in 1689 with his new wife Wilhelmina Dewees. It was in New Amsterdam (New York) that NICHOLAS married WILHELMINA on 29 May 1689 after their bans were published on 10 May 1689 at the Dutch Reformed Church. It is not known whether this was a ship-board romance or whether they knew each other in Holland. She was only 16 at the time of their marriage.
The family's arrival date in New Amsterdam is uncertain. NICHOLAS's father Willem, purchased a lot in Germantown on 8 August 1687. We also know that his sister Elizabeth and brother Gerhard came to America with the family. It is possible they all arrived in New Amsterdam as early as 1686/7 and all went to Germantown together. If this is the case NICHOLAS must have gone back to New Amsterdam to be married.
NICHOLAS RITTENHOUSE was awarded 2 half lots on Main Street (later Germantown Avenue) These were lots #20 and #21 which were on the East side of Main Street toward Bristol.
CLAES RITTINGHUYSEN (NICHOLAS RITTENHOUSE) is shown on the list of those"naturalized" when they took their Oaths of Allegiance in Germantown on 7 May 1691. A copy of this list is in my files as well as a copy of the actual "Oath". There were so many immigrants from Europe arriving by 1708 that Pennsylvania decided they should make anyone who had come from Europe take a second Oath Of Allegiance. So in 1708 NICHOLAS RITTENHOUSE took his second Oath Of Allegiance which was confirmed by The Queen In Council 20 Febrauary 1713. This is shown in the HISTORY OF SOUDERTON by Henry S.Landis 1930 pages 142/3.
NICHOLAS was a paper maker by trade and a Mennonite by religion. He was chosen as a Mennonite minister in 1712 and was a delegate to the first Mennonite Conference in 1725 when 16 Mennonite ministers adopted the "Dordech Confession of Faith".
NICHOLAS went into partnership with his father in the paper mill the latter had founded. This was at a time when his father purchased the shares from the 3 original partners. This paper mill was the first to operate in America. When Willem Rittenhouse died he bequeathed the mill to NICHOLAS. It was located on Paper Mill Creek which emptied into Wissachickon Creek on the west edge of Germantown in Roxborough Township, Philadelphia County, Pa. In 1994 all this land is contained in Fairmount Park.
They are now restoring any original buildings left standing such as the house built by Willem Rittenhouse in 1707 which NICHOLAS occupied after his father's death. There are a few other buildings but unfortunately the mill is not one of them. In my files are photographs taken in 1995 of the 1707 House and the mill site on the creek. There is also a copy of a painting that was made of the mill before it was destroyed. There is a copy of a historic map and modern map showing the location.
In my file is a copy of the cover of the Germantown Crier which was a publication issued by the Germantown Historical Society. They had researched all the original owners of property on Main Street (Germantown Avenue) and it shows the lots assigned to NICHOLAS RITTENHOUSE.
CLAWS RUTTINGHEYSEN (Nicholas Rittenhouse) is shown on the FIRST PENNSYLVANIA TAX LIST in 1693. He paid 6 shillings tax in Germantown. He also was one of the signers of the petition by landholders asking for relief from taxation. This was filed with the Pennsylvania Assembly on 10 3rd month (May) 1692.

CLAES RIGHTINGHOUS (Nicholas Rittenhouse) is shown as owning 50 acres in Roxborough Township in the list of Landholders in Philadelphia County in 1734.
In 1759 Mennonites in Germantown joined with neighbors to create a school "free to all denominations whatsoever without any regard to name or sect of people". The school as all other 18th century schools charged tuition. To keep that from becoming a hardship Mennonite NICHOLAS RITTENHOUSE joined with Christopher Sauer, the printer with German Baptist connections and John George Alsentz, pastor of the Reformed Church, to be a committee to reduce fees for the poor. This showed a strong ecumenical feeling when it came to schools.

ELIZABETH RITTENHOUSE and HEIVERT PAPEN had the following children:
i. STYNTIE4 (#22768) was born in Germantown, Phil. Co. PA, USA CA 1693. STYNTIE died 1728 in Vincent Twp., Chester Co., Pa., at age 35.
14 ii. MARIA (MARY) was born 1695
15 iii. GERTRUDE CATHERINE was born 1697
16 iv. MARGARET RITTENHOUSE was born 1699
17 v. ELIZABETH was born 1700
6. GERHARD (GARRETT)3 RITTENHOUSE (WILHELM2 RÜDDINGHUYSEN, CLAES1 RETTINGHAUSEN) (#552) was born in Geld, Arnhem, Netherlands 1674. GERHARD died 19 February 1742 in Cresheim, Philadelphia Co., Pa., at age 67.
He married MARGARET (OR ANN) REVACOMB 1694 in Germantown, Phil. Co. PA, USA. (MARGARET (OR ANN) REVACOMB is #36189.)
GERHARD RITTENHOUSE owned a grist mill in Gresheim which was on the north edge of Germantown, Pa.. In 1687 he owned 447 acres on lots 1,2 and 3. Map showing these lots in Cresheim is in my Germantown files. 175 of these acres were purchased on 16 May 1715 from Hans Grof and his wife Susanna, who lived in Stassburg, Chester County (later Lancaster County), Pa. The deed is found in Philadelphia County Deed Book D4 page 54 dated 16 May 1715 and recorded 12 February 1782.
Although there has been much discussion about who was the wife of Gerhard, I believe the most evidence available points to MARGE REVACOMB (RUBICAM). In a family tree found in the Wayne County LIbrary, Wooster, Ohio, it shows MARGE REVACOMB as Gerhard's wife. There is no identification on this loose page so it certainly can't be used as proof. However at the same library there is a more authentic document, It is a copy of a 5 page printed pamphlet issued by some member of the Brewer Family dated 27 September 1895. It shows the connection between the Rittenhouse and Brewer families which is in the 5th generation down from Gerhard through William-Peter-Elisha-Alanson and Hannah who married L. D. Brewer in 1845. The second page of this pamphlet is a drop chart that is stamped at the top with DANIEL. K. CASSEL, 4333 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia. In this chart it shows the wife of Gerhard as Miss Revacomb. So this comes closest to any proof of Gerhard's wife. But maybe Gerhard's Will contains the strongest information. He states "I appoint my trusty kinsmen, Charles and Justice Revacomb to be the Executors of my estate". Did he call them kinsmen because of their relationship to his wife ? Justus Wilhelm Rubenkam was married to Susanna Rittenhouse, Gerhardt's grandaughter and Charles Rubicam was married to Mary Rittenhouse, another of Gerhard'ts granddaughters. The name is spelled many ways. Rubenkam, Revecomb, Rubicam etc.

GERARD RITTINGHAUSEN (SEAL.)
Signed, Sealed, delivered & declared by the Testator as his last Will
and Testament, in the presence of us, Christopher Bastian William Reise John Hammer, Jr.
You will see from the above Will that GERRHARD granted all of his plantation on Cresheim Creek (lying between the lands of Matthias Walsam and John Hammer and up to the Roxborough Township line, with the grist mill and associated land) to his younger son, Peter, and all of his land on the northeast side of the highway leading from Germantown to North Wales to his oldest son, William. His name was given as Gerard Rittinghausen on his will; Garret and Gerhard were other spellings of his name and spelling of the family name included Rittinghuysen and Rittinghousen.
The names of Gerhard's wives have changed as more information has been gathered. At first (Daniel Kolb Cassel 1893: p. 75) it was believed he married an Ann Revacomb because her brothers, Justice and Charles Revacomb, were executors of his will. Larew (1975, page 91) suggests she might have been the wife of Gerard's son Peter.
